CA Gig Drivers Join Illinois Drivers in Fight for Union Rights
The movement for union rights for gig drivers is spreading across the nation and California Gig Workers Union drivers are leading the charge!
Uber and Lyft drivers with CGWU headed to Illinois this week in a show of solidarity with Illinois Drivers Alliance, that state’s gig driver union.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Illinois Drivers Alliance filed SB 2906, their version of AB 1340, the historic California bill that we won that gives us the right to unionize.

CGWU drivers were there at the press conference and in the capitol building, along with hundreds of Illinois drivers – showing the world, and Uber and Lyft that the movement for driver rights is only getting stronger.
“I think what we’ve done in California is show other drivers that this is possible. Uber and Lyft have billions of dollars, but drivers are the reason why and we have the power to win a seat at the table. I’m so excited to join the drivers in Illinois as they take the next step to winning a union.” said Travis Baird, a California Gig Workers Union member from Sunnyvale who made the trip to Illinois.
Like AB 1340 last year, SB 2906 has to wind through the legislative process, but we’ll be ready to support our Illinois union siblings every step of the way!
