Drivers Speak Out: LAX Fee Increases Must Support Drivers

California Gig Workers Union drivers spoke out at a recent Los Angeles World Airports board meeting, where the commissioners were considering raising the fees paid by companies like Uber and Lyft to access Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Drivers came to the board with three demands.

  1. Adopt guardrails to ensure that additional fees aren’t passed on to drivers;
  2. Allocated increased revenue to improve the driver staging lot at LAX;
  3. Communicate and consult with CGWU drivers on future decisionmaking on rideshare related items

Drivers are an essential part of the ecosystem that makes LAX one of the biggest airports in the world. Not only do we deliver thousands of passengers to and from the airport every week, but the fees paid by rideshare companies generate direct revenue for the airport.

We deserve fair treatment! If these fees increase, then not only should we not be harmed financially, but also some of that revenue should go toward maintaining the waiting lot, where drivers sometimes spend hours waiting for rides without a place to charge our devices or clean restrooms.

As the only recognized TNC driver organization, California Gig Workers Union is a vital stakeholder in decisions that affect rideshare at airports and we must be consulted!
